On October 6, 2010, Instagram was launched by Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom as a mobile photo-sharing social media platform. You could follow friends and enjoy their photos, crop and filter your own photos to share with followers and enjoy the world and your relationships in a new way. It was super popular, super fast.
Just 18 months after its official launch and with around 30 million users, Instagram was purchased by Facebook for $1 billion. A smart move on Facebook’s part. Today, Instagram has over 200 million monthly users, 65% of whom are located outside the United States. It continues to grow and flourish. It’s reached notoriety by being banned in China, hitting its stride with the introduction of direct selling and has even birthed a new app, Hyperlapse.

I have a special place in my heart for Instagram, and I’ve enjoyed seeing big and small brands think outside the box with their campaigns on this platform. I even follow a few brands in my personal feed. They have to be creative or visually pleasing though, or I won’t follow them for long.
