Ah, Instagram- it’s the perfect place to show your best duck face, your vacation photos, or what you’re having for lunch. So, how do you use it for marketing? Canadian retailer Herschel Supply has figured out a way to effectively market their popular line of travel gear, while still keeping their content compelling.

The strength of any photograph lies in its ability to tell a story, and Allison Butula, Herschel Supply’s social media manager, is fully cognizant of this fact. Rather than creating a campaign composed of glossy still shots of their backpacks, wallets and duffel bags, she looks for images that are aesthetically pleasing and have their own narrative.

Since 2012, the Herschel Supply media marketing team has been building a follower base and engaging with consumers using two primary hashtags: #welltravelled and #herschelsupply.

The photos bearing those hashtags range from the simple …

… to the breathtaking …

… to the familiar …

… to the unique!

Their message is about travel, but it’s also about exploring the world in your own neighborhood. Allison Butula states, “We often say ‘well-travelled’ which means exploring your surroundings, whether that’s across the world or in your backyard.” To that end, the company hopes people use their products not just to experience aspirational travel, but also to engage in everyday travelling.

What do you think of these shots? Do they inspire you to get out there and see more of the world around you? Further, do they make you want to pick up a bag from Herschel Supply to do so?
