The United States has been engaging with jihadists on social media.

The U.S. State Department’s Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications (CSCC) was established under Executive Order 13584 to “coordinate, orient, and inform government-wide foreign communications activities targeted against terrorism and violent extremism, particularly al-Qaida and its affiliates and adherents.”  And one of the ways they are doing this … is by engaging jihadists on social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

The CSCC Digital Outreach Team openly communicates on Twitter @ThinkAgain_DOS to counter terrorist propaganda and misinformation about the United States. Their most-used hashtag is #ThinkAgainTurnAway

According to CNN, the U.S. Government has been communicating in social media in Urdu, Arabic and Somali for three years, but the English Twitter feed just launched in December 2013. Here’s a small sample of some of their tweets.

Will McCants, a militant Islam scholar at the Brookings Institution who helped set up the CSCC, believes that jihadist groups had been unnerved by some of the CSCC’s claims – in particular, that mostly Muslims have been the victims of Islamic extremists.

Do you think this will make any difference in the U.S. war on terrorism?
