Social is yet to be defined for music in the digital space. Spotify has taken some of the largest strides in bringing social networking to a streaming music platform. Users have been sharing music online in IRCs since before the days of Napster. The goal of the Spotify doesn’t deviate from those days in that they aim to get more people to listen to new music. @JoshKarpf, Spotfy’s Global Social Media Director says it best:

“Music is the original social network. People were sharing music before sharing was cool. Everyone has an experience creating that perfect mix tape for someone they care about. It immediately has an emotional connection, so there is sort of an inherent social graph that exists with Spotify.”

wayvs co-founder Brian Bethel  sat down with Josh Karpf to get some insight into how Spotify markets its brand and product online. It’s all about “content that is designed to get users to listen to music at that moment in time.”

“In our messaging we look at the cultural calendar and the role that music plays in that and a lot of nostalgic moments, whether that’s the anniversary of an iconic album or the birthday of a famous artist,” Josh said. “We basically try to fill our social channels with culturally relevant music content that is designed to get users to listen to music at that moment in time while leveraging the virality of our channels to get users to share that across their social channels.”

Here are some examples of what we’re talking about:
