How do we become the brand consumers never knew they needed in their life? Creating and maintaining relationships is the Sorcerers Stone to a brand’s elixir of life (forgive the Harry Potter reference, but seriously, it is). It’s all in how you play the game—the dating game, that is.
Everyone wants to be wooed. Everyone wants to feel special. Becoming more humanized on social media is the trend for 2014 because that’s what consumers need; a company that will be there to help them, entertain them, and relate to them on a personal level. In other words, don’t just go for the “feel right” from the get-go. Nobody likes that guy.
1. Instead, start by introducing yourself.

This can be as simple as retweeting or liking an article they’ve posted.
2. Ask, listen (read), and respond.

Ask questions about an article they’ve shared, their interests, and their lives, whatever. Just keep it relevant (no matter how badly you want to know their opinion on mermaids).
3. Build trust by offering helpful information, even if it doesn’t directly help your business.

You sell mattresses. There are people having trouble sleeping due to a cold. Send them a link to a blog that offers advice on that. You might not sell them a bed right now, but mattresses don’t last forever. They’ll remember you when it comes time to buy.
4. Make their needs a priority above your own. Remember, it’s not about you.
5. Make your move, IF the time is right.

Most importantly, don’t get discouraged if you don’t score a lead every time. Unfortunately, it’s a numbers game and not everyone wants to play. And don’t worry—there are plenty of fish in the sea.
