B2B social mediaB2B social media marketing is becoming a legitimate and even necessary solution for business-to-business marketing departments. Social media options can fulfill very important marketing needs if companies avoid the B2B social media mistakes and focus on three areas.

1. Become an industry resource.
B2B social media marketing allows companies to easily share information about their company and their products with a specific audience – whether that is an end consumer, or another company like a vendor.  It is easy to keep the information up-to-date, which makes it likely that people will look to these social media sources for information that is relevant to your industry.

2. Show the human side of the company.
Social media has taken off for the simple reason that people like to feel connected to others on a personal level.  Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn all allow businesses to reach their customers on that same personal level.  This human connection helps build relationships and trust between businesses as well as between individuals.

3. Take networking to a whole new level.
The personal connections that are developed through social media create opportunities for networking that have a nearly endless reach.  The impact of social media in marketing has been proven effective by many B2B companies as demonstrated through the increase in the popularity of Facebook pages.

For example, from December 2009 to July 2010, Dell’s Facebook page popularity increased by 259%; during that same timeframe, Cisco’s increased 206%, and Salesforce’s increased by 139%.  All of these companies have a B2B focus and are leveraging their Facebook presence heavily.

It is important to understand the importance of social media for B2B companies to reach their targeted audience on a personal, relatable way.  Do you have a B2B company that you have effectively marketed in social media? Share your story in the comments!
