Shot It, Got It! – Åhléns Aces Instagram

Just when we think we’ve seen it all in social media marketing, someone comes along with something totally new to take us by surprise! This week’s innovator is a retailer, Åhléns, and their big idea is pretty simple, making the most of the public’s love of Instagram to boost sales.

 

Here it is: Åhléns has posted three stop-motion videos on Instagram, featuring clothing, furniture, makeup and other products, zooming by at a rapid pace. Customers who can capture these items in a screenshot on their phones can post those shots to Instagram for a 50% discount on that item. All that’s required is the screenshot, a hashtag, posted to Instagram and then presented at the register.

 

 

How easy is that? Of course, your friends might be annoyed by your random posting of merchandise, but half off is probably worth it, right? And anyway, by posting, you’re alerting them to the promotion, so they can annoy you in turn and get their own discount. Overall, it’s a win for everyone!

 

It’s also a great example of how well thinking outside the box works in social media marketing. Any retailer can post photos of their items, and many have gotten consumers to post their merchandise, too, to great advantage. (Think of the gorgeous photos posted on behalf of Herschel Supply!) Throw in the additional challenge of having to work to get the images as they fly past, and you’ve got something intriguing. Customers have to actually put in some effort to grab the discount, and that’s what makes it fun and different.
