Smokey Bear is a brand that turns 70-years-old tomorrow with no signs of slowing down or being left behind. Born in 1944 during World War II, Smokey Bear’s brand message has stayed pretty consistent through the years, but has managed to adapt, adjust and adopt social media to keep current and hip. Any brand that stands the test of time and yet remains consistent in their message, even if it’s a Public Service Announcement, deserves a “kudos” in my book.

Smokey is on Twitter with over 25,00 followers and on Facebook with over 293,000 fans, as well as on YouTube, Instagram and Flickr. You can wish him a happy birthday on Facebook with a special birthday wish, and he even has a birthday hashtag: #SmokeyBDay.

His tweets are hip and trendy … and, of course, environmentally conscious:

This is a brand that could have fizzled out or not evolved, and it would have remained fondly in the memories of  adults as a fun icon from their childhood.  But instead, the talent behind the brand took a smart approach to keep their 70-year-old message fresh and relevant.

Social media has given Smokey a new voice and a new platform. And it looks like people are listening.
