wayvs loves small businesses with big ideas. And we found one…

We recently published an article on an up-and-coming product called CleverPet, a completely customizable, interactive game console for dogs. This product appealed to us on a few levels – mostly because the majority of us have pets and the innovative idea behind it really grabbed our attention – so we reached out to the creators to discuss the product, Kickstarter and tips for starting a business.

Leo Trottier, CEO and inventor of CleverPet, (and a really nice guy) and Dan Knudsen, automated animal interaction specialist and Chief Science Officer (also a super nice guy), explained how the brand is currently focusing less on being a big business and more on value. Developing the best product for people is his priority – the rest will come with time. Trottier explains it is important to “create value before opening a big bank account or building a great website.” With a background in science, Leo admits he “has no idea what a great social plan looks like.” His solution? Make friends with people who do know. Bring in talented people.

When asked “Why Kickstarter?” The duo replied with, “it was the obvious choice.” Because the brand (creator) is rooted in tech and science, “it just made sense to go with Kickstarter.” Once the Kickstarter goal is reached, the next phase will be product development, marketing and website creation.

Leo and Dan collectively agree that organic growth is important. Being social with the community and building great relationships will make all the difference when the device is ready for launch (February 2015).  CleverPet is currently building their social presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. And they’re very responsive on Twitter! We know first-hand!

A few reasons we’re excited about CleverPet:

  • It comes with a cool mobile app to track your pet’s progress and to keep an eye on how much food or how many treats he or she is eating throughout the day!
  • The device is completely customizable. For the tech people out there, you can create your own code for your pet, creating new games and challenges.
  • All upgrades are done via WiFi.

wayvs looks forward to seeing where CleverPet is headed and what mark they’ll leave on digital. We have a feeling they will mark their social territory in no time!
